The 18-hole private golf course, Lenox Hills Country Club, designed by Devereux Emmet and owned and operated by Benjamin F. Yoakum, was developed in 1923. New York eventually purchased the golf course, was greatly expanded, and re-opened as Bethpage State Park in 1932.

According to the Census Bureau, the incorporated village has an area of 1.1 square miles, all land. The racial makeup of Farmingdale is 88.2% White, 71.1% Non-Hispanic White, 2.6% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.5% Asian, and 4.7% from other races.
