Altadena, a combination of Spanish "Alta" for Upper and "Dena" from Pasadena, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the Verdugo Mountains, in Los Angeles County, California. Benjamin Eaton first developed water sources in the mid-1860s from the Arroyo Seco and Eaton Canyon to irrigate his vineyard at the edge of Eaton Canyon. Eaton tried to sell the partners' land, helping broker a deal with Daniel Berry in 1873 to purchase 4,000 acres of the ranch. The property included the land of present-day Altadena, developing 2,500 acres further south as Pasadena. The land that would become Altadena was sold to Fred and John Woodberry in 1881. The brothers launched the subdivision of Altadena in 1887.

Capt. Frederick Woodberry, and his brother, John Woodbury, purchased 937 acres in 1880, known as the Woodbury Ranch. John established the Pasadena Improvement Company in 1887, with a plan of residential development referred to as the Woodbury Subdivision. 

The brothers contacted Byron O. Clark, who established a nursery in the foothills in 1875. He called his nursery "Altadena Nursery," coined from Spanish "Alta," meaning upper, and "Dena" from Pasadena. Woodbury asked Clark if he could use "Altadena" for his subdivision, and Clark agreed.

The new community immediately attracted millionaires from the east. In 187, printing magnate Andrew McNally, and his friend, George Gill Green, built mansions on what was to become Millionaire's Row, now known as Mariposa Street near Santa Rosa Avenue.

Newspaper moguls William Kellogg and William Armiger Scripps also built homes in the new community, east of Fair Oaks Avenue. Further east, Zane Grey bought a home from Arthur Herbert Woodward, adding a second-floor study to the building. The renowned Benziger Publishing Company built a mansion on Mariposa and Santa Rosa Avenue.

Over the years, Altadena has been the subject of annexation attempts by Pasadena. Pasadena nibbled at its edges by annexing several small neighborhoods through the 1940s. In 1960, Altadena's black population was under four percent. Over the next decade, half of the community's white population left, being replaced by people of color.
