In 1925, the Hopkins-McNeil Investment Company threw weekly Hawthorne "revivals" in the style of popular evangelical preachers like Aimee Semple McPherson. The weekly event, which featured speeches and singing, drew up to 1,000 people.

While Hawthorne was primarily made up of single-family homes, there was one grand estate that captured the imagination of youngsters, the "House of Surprises''. It was owned by the metal worker and sculptor Felix Peano. It was famous for its lush gardens.

Hawthorne struggled throughout the '20s, further fueled by the Great Depression, with almost half of the town receiving government assistance. Hawthorne's famous resident, Jim Thorpe, was not immune to financial woes. The 1912 Olympics hero who became the first Native American to win a gold medal found himself in Hawthorne with a family to support and no money.

Like most of the country, the threat of war pulled the community out of the Depression. In 1939, Jack Northrop opened the Northrop Corporation in Hawthorne. During World War II, the plant would become a major aircraft supplier, employing more than 2,000 people.

With the sudden influx of settlers and cash, the once careworn town transformed into an All-American suburb. The popular gambling hall, Hob Nob, was turned into a non-denominational church that ministered to "constituents" instead of parishioners.
